These small, child-like creatures were created as a “digital pet” of sorts to accompany Sonic Adventure’s core gameplay. I’m talking, of course, about Chao.Ĭhao were introduced in 1998 with the release of Sonic Adventure in Japan.

And no, I’m not talking about Tails or Knuckles or Dr. But of all the games I played in these very formative years, it was Sonic and his unlikely companions that have stuck with me the longest. The Nintendo Gamecube and the Sega Dreamcast were my childhood consoles of choice and I played just about everything on those bad boys, from Soul Caliber to Zelda and back. This era was dominated by the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, but at the time, I gravitated toward the familiar. The turn of the century was a cultural apex to which many of my current tastes can be traced, including my obsession with video games. Organized sports, slumber parties, the Cell Saga and, admittedly, Total Request Live.

The very first Chao that you start with has the regular colour, and this is why you can see it change colour depending on how you raise it.The early 2000s are home to some of my fondest childhood memories. Regular Coloured Chao have a colour which varies depending on their current alignment and evolution. The regular colour requires more explanation than this. Most of the available colours listed above are self-explanatory: a red Chao will always look red, and a yellow Chao will always look yellow. You can find images of each colour in the Chao Gallery. A Coloured Chao only ever has one base colour out of the available 14, which can be anything in the following list: Regular, White, Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Purple, Sky Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Grey, Lime Green, or Black. They may often appear to visually have multiple colours on their bodies, but this is an effect resulting from other factors of their breed. In fact, the very first Chao that you start with is a special kind of Coloured Chao, referred to as regular Two-tone Chao.Įvery Coloured Chao has a single base colour. Left: Two-tone Regular / Right: Mono-tone OrangeĬoloured Chao are the most common as they are the easiest to obtain.
